- Iron pyrite is hard, and not malleable. Gold is very malleable, soft.
- Iron pyrite is light. Gold is heavy, with considerable density and mass.
- Iron pyrite will not shine in the shade. Gold will shine in the shade.
- Pyrite is magnetic(but not always). Gold is not magnetic.
- Pyrite is hard, shingled, and has sharp jagged shapes. Gold is smooth.
- Pyrite reflects light. Gold is naturally shiny, and does not reflect light in the same way.
Using these tips will help you spot gold versus the dreaded "Fool's gold".
