What is paydirt? Paydirt is often an expression that means to strike it rich. It was used by miner's in the late 1800s and early 1900s when finding gold. This expression is still used today, but it is not as common.
The expression comes from the real paydirt, which is really dirt that pays. Pay dirt is soil that contains valuable metals including gold, silver, platinum, and even precious gems. It is most commonly in reference to dirt that contains gold.
It is sometimes referred to as gold dirt.
Nowadays, paydirt is sold to hobby miner and prospectors. These are people that are interested in gold panning or mining, but don't have the time or the resources to go out in the wilderness and find their own paydirt and spend the time filing for a claim. Mining companies sell small portions from a pound to 50 pounds of their gold bearing dirt at cheap prices.
This paydirt is an excellent learning opportunity and a fun experience for those that want to try out the methods of the original 49ers. It also provides real gold, that is worth real money. It is also fun because you never know what you are going to get. Sometimes striking it rich may be a few flakes and a small nugget or two. Other times you might "hit paydirt" and "strike it rich" with a large nugget worth several hundred or a thousand dollars.
It's the luck of the draw, but panning mining paydirt is a fun hobby that often pays for itself.
